Abstract
This paper analyzes Lo primer llibre dels noys (1898), written by Francesc Flos y Calcat, to teach spelling and reading to the College of Sant Jordi students and later to those of other Catalan schools. This book includes the general spelling of the time, texts for reading practice (mainly taken from the Catholic catechism), and a brief section on the primary professions of the period. In this manual, Flos applies the methods of pedagogical renewal that emanated from the New School movement, based on the practical teaching of and in the language of students, their context, and the pleasant transmission of the contents.
