Abstract

This article explores the intricate relationship between religion and secularism in modern democratic societies. It examines the tensions and challenges arising from the coexistence of these two distinct value systems, while exploring the potential for constructive dialogue and collaboration. The article begins by analyzing the conflictual nature of the religion-secularism relationship, highlighting the various sources of tension: rationalization, social spheres, and values. It then challenges the binary view of these concepts and proposes a more nuanced approach that acknowledges their interactions and complementarities. The second part focuses on the potential for convergence between religion and secularism in the pursuit of the common good. The article examines the role of universal human values and proposes avenues for reflection towards a harmonious and constructive cohabitation within a democratic state. The importance of mutual recognition is emphasized as the foundation of a harmonious and inclusive society. The article advocates for a holistic recognition that encompasses all dimensions of the individual and the group, valuing their respective contributions in all aspects of human life. Finally, the article calls for a collaborative approach to harness competition towards the common good, leveraging the diversity and complementarity of competencies.
