Abstract
This paper studies the construction of a collective Jesuit identity analyzing the biography Life of Father Ignatius of Loyola, written by Pedro de Ribadeneira during the Generalate of Claudio Acquaviva (1581–1615). The Societas Iesu is already a broad international organization and Acquaviva promotes writing an official history of the order. This article analyzes how the image of San Ignacio, contained in the texts of the first Jesuits (Lainez, Rodríguez, Câmara, Polanco) is modified in the book of Ribadeneira converted into a officious text. At the same time the previous texts are taken out of circulation by the government of the order.
