The notion of “value effectiveness” in Max Scheler and the constitution of the environment
Main Article Content
Abstract
To understand the Schelerian concept of environment (Umwelt) —which refers to a subjective structure of conative or practical nature, superimposed on the world’s objectivity (Welt)—, it is necessary to elucidate the meaning of a lesser-known category: that of value “effectiveness” (Wirksamkeit). Only what is “effective” on me by virtue of its values belongs to my practical environment. I intend to revive this technical concept and show its crucial relevance to the problem of the environment constitution. In particular, the distinction between the objective “value” and its subjective “effectiveness” separates Scheler’s theory from any kind of irrationalism. Secondarily, I consider reasonable to defend this position against Dietrich von Hildebrand’s critical alternative.
