Fidesu no qvio: The Sūtra of Faith the Hermeneutical Strategy of the Jesuits in Japan and Evangelization through Buddhist Terms

Abstract

Christianity was introduced into Japanese territory by the Jesuits in the 16th century. The numerous Buddhist terms that made up the first translations were part of Francis Xavier’s inculturation strategy. Largely because of this, the missionaries were considered an eccentric new branch of Buddhism, arriving from India. The subsequent establishment of a translation criterion was the result of the Jesuits' arduous process of learning Japanese, in which their interaction with new converts was key. However, as the philological analysis of the Buddhist terminology implicit in the late Christian translation, known as Fidesu no Quio (Sūtra of Faith), reveals, the hermeneutical guidelines would not be part of the dogma, since the perpetuation of the mission, in the Japanese, required sacrificing much of the cultural and religious baggage, adapting a new meaning to the gospel message.
