Abstract

Sports leisure among young people promotes their physical, psychological and mental well-being, reinforces personal and social values and acts as a protective factor against risky behaviors, such as drug and alcohol consumption. This study aimed to analyze the valuation of the importance of physical activity and/or sports practice and their perceived benefits among young individuals in the Autonomous City of Melilla. Secondary objectives included understanding the relationship between perceptions of the importance of physical activity and its psychological and social benefits, as well as evaluating the impact of independent variables such as gender, occupation, and the use of technology and social networks on these valuations. A non-experimental, quantitative, and cross-sectional methodology was employed, utilizing a descriptive, correlational, and inferential design. The study recruited an incidental sample comprising 1,949 young people aged between 18 and 35 years. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered online. The results suggest that young people perceive physical activity and sports to hold moderately high importance in their lives and leisure time. Additionally, physical activity is perceived as beneficial for alleviating problems and enhancing self-confidence. However, it is less valued as a means of socializing with friends. The findings also reveal significant differences in terms of gender, in the valuation of the importance of sports, with men placing greater importance on it. Furthermore, significant differences were found in the valuation based on occupation and the use of technology and social networks. The findings underscore the need for inclusive strategies that consider gender differences and other factors to promote physical activity and sports among young people and maximize their benefits.
